The familiar sounds and smells of a county fair…
Corn dogs, elephant ears, candied apples, and game booth attendants heckling the pretty gal I’m walking with… All the classic American-fair-trim…familiar to all of us. Except, something is a little different tonight. Twinkling Christmas displays line the row leading to the bumper cars. 100,000 individual lights strewn up against the blackest night. Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer plays on an over-powered speaker somewhere as I stand in line for funnel cake.
And although it’s the middle of December, the air is thick and dewy, laden with the musk that only happens in the tropics. Welcome to Miami. That pretty gal I’m walking with, Aylen – she doesn’t want to ride the Gravitron, or any rides really. They make her dizzy. But, I insist.
This is the essay’s backdrop. Santa’s Enchanted Forest. How could I resist?
